Product description The B&H Binocular Buying Guide Read More Optimized to provide accurate and true views at extreme ranges and in all light conditions, the Athlon Optics 12x50 Argos Binocular is designed with an array of features that will make it your constant companion when you're out in wide-open spaces on the trail, at the range, or bird and nature watching.Engineered to deliver peak performance in challenging light conditions, the Argos is outfitted with large objectives treated with multiple layers of broadband anti-reflection coatings on all lens surfaces, dielectric coated and phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms, and protective exterior lens coatings that work together to maximize light transmission through the entire optical path. The results are bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution across the entire visual spectrum—even during the early dawn and late dusk hours. The large objectives also ensure subjects at extreme long range remain sharp and clear without the dimming that can occur with high-power optics such as this. To further improve the observational experience, the Argos is designed with an apparent angle of view that approaches wide-angle to minimize the distracting hand shake that is common with powerful optics and present a spacious field of view.Athlon thoughtfully constructed the Argos to make it easy and comfortable to hold and allow it to withstand the elements. Its overall open-bridge/dual-hinge design provides more gripping surface area than conventional closed-bridge configurations without sacrificing strength and stability. The optical tubes are argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a polymer composite chassis that is lightweight and durable as well as resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to fuzzy views over time. Ergonomic and slip-resistant armoring provides a sure grip, and ridged palm-pad and finger rest accents further improve grip strength. Athlon includes objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard to protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe during use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively. For those who experience fatigue when holding large optics for long periods, the Argos can be tripod mounted using an optional adapter for easy hands-free use. - Optical Performance
-
- Powerful 12x magnification enables detailed observations of distant subjects across prairies, steppes, and oceans
- Large 50mm objective lenses are optimized for use in low light—such as during the early morning and late evening hours—and to help ensure views stay bright when viewing at extreme long range
- Roof prism light path ensures the optical tubes remain slim for easier handling without affecting performance
- BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
- Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
- ESP dielectric prism coatings boost surface reflectivity to greater than 99% for maximum light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
- Broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission and improve contrast and color fidelity across the entire visible spectrum
- Proprietary XPL exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
- Apparent angle of view approaches wide-angle to minimize the appearance of the distracting hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics, while presenting a spacious and immersive observational experience
- 257-foot field of view at 1000 yards
- Use and Handling
-
- Open-bridge/dual-hinge configuration provides more gripping surface for one-handed use without sacrificing strength or stability
- Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, even while wearing gloves
- Right-eye dioptric correction allows user to compensate for optical prescription to produce sharper views
- Broad 56-76mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
- Twist-up click-stop eyecups for easy use with or without eyewear
- Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to eliminate vibrations and arm fatigue
- 16mm eye relief allows for more comfortable viewing with reduced eye strain, especially during long-duration glassing sessions
- 4.2mm exit pupil will cover most pupils as they open and dilate in low light to keep the whole scene in view without vignetting
- Construction Details
-
- Bridge configuration helps to reduce weight while providing more surface area for improved grip strength, especially when using single-handedly
- Lightweight and durable polymer composite chassis material
- Composite material is resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to the optical components moving out of alignment over time, preventing sharp focus
- Ergonomic body design positions the hand over the binocular's center of balance for additional comfort and reduced strain and fatigue
- Protective rubber armor with ridged palm pads and finger rests provides a solid and secure slip-resistant grip
- Argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature and environmental conditions
- Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surface without the fear of losing them when not in use
