Product description The B&H Binocular Buying Guide Read More Designed for versatility and to deliver sharp, accurate, and true views, the Athlon Optics 8x42 Midas ED Binocular is built with an array of features, materials, and optical technologies that will make it your constant companion when you're out birding, hunting, hiking, and camping.Engineered to deliver peak performance in all light conditions, the Midas is outfitted with extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics, dielectric coated and phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms, and protective exterior lens coatings. These work together to maximize light transmission through the entire light path without distortion or color fringing. The results are bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution across the entire visual spectrum—even in challenging conditions like at dawn and dusk, or when peering into dense underbrush or thick canopies. To further improve the observational experience, the Midas is designed with a long eye relief and comfortable exit pupil, and a wide 65° apparent angle of view that presents a spacious field of view for a more enjoyable and near-panoramic observational experience.Athlon thoughtfully constructed the Midas to make it easy and comfortable to hold and allow it to withstand the elements. The optical tubes are argon filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a lightweight and durable magnesium alloy chassis. This gives it the strength it needs for constant use outdoors while reducing the overall weight for easier handling and carrying. Ergonomic and slip-resistant armoring provides a sure grip, and textured palm-pad accents further improve grip strength. Athlon includes objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard to protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe during use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively. For those who experience fatigue when holding large optics for long periods, the Midas can be tripod mounted using an optional adapter for easy hands-free use. - Optical Performance
-
- Moderate 8x power magnifies views without sacrificing exit pupil, eye relief, and field of view
- Larger 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability for enhanced low-light performance such as at dawn and dusk or when peering into dense brush
- Compact roof prism light path ensures the optical tubes remain slim for easier handling without affecting performance
- Extra low-dispersion (ED) glass lens elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast and improved color rendition and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
- BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
- Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
- ESP dielectric prism coatings boost surface reflectivity to greater than 99% for maximum light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
- Broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission and improve contrast and color fidelity across the entire visible spectrum
- Proprietary XPL exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
- Wide 65° apparent angle of view presents an immersive and panoramic observational experience
- Spacious 426-foot field of view at 1000 yards
- Use and Handling
-
- Closed-bridge configuration provides a stable and strong platform for the internal focusing mechanism
- Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, even while wearing gloves
- Right-eye dioptric correction allows user to compensate for optical prescription to produce sharper views
- Broad 54-74mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
- Twist-up click-stop eyecups for easy use with or without eyewear
- Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to eliminate vibrations and arm fatigue
- Long 17.2mm eye relief makes viewing easier with reduced eye strain, especially during long-duration glassing sessions
- Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils as they open and fully dilate in low light to keep the whole scene in view without vignetting
- Construction Details
-
- Lightweight and durable magnesium alloy chassis material
- Ergonomic body design positions the hand over the binocular's center of balance for additional comfort and reduced strain and fatigue
