Product description

The Dreadbox Polyend Medusa is 6-oscillator hybrid synthesizer that combines the rich sound of analog with the vast control of digital to create a highly expressive instrument, designed to inspire musicians and producers on stage or in the studio. The Medusa is broken down into three sections: Grid, Sequencer Control, and Synthesizer.

The grid consists of 64 fully responsive and customizable 3-dimensional expressive pads that are arranged in an 8 x 8 grid. Different modulation parameters can be assigned per each pad's X-axis (side-to-side), Y-axis (up-and-down), and Z (pressure). The grid can be configured with up to 39 different scales with various notes per scale, ensuring that what notes you play will always be in key. What's more, the grid can store 128 programs each with it's own sequence and voice settings and includes 32 factory presets to get you started. With the sequencer control section and its crisp OLED, you are able to record, edit, and playback notes and parameter changes per step. The on-board sequencer provides three modes: step, live, and incremental. The grid and sequencer control section work in tandem to create a powerful musical controller and sequencer.

The synthesizer engine features three synchronizable analog oscillators with classic waveforms including saw, square (pulse), triangle, and sine. Each oscillator can be tuned over 3-octaves and includes a coarse tune of 12 semitones, as well as fine-tune of ±100 cents. The square wave features a pulse-width knob, which can be modulated by one of the envelopes or LFOs. Analog oscillator 3 can also controls the amount of exponential frequency modulation (FM) of analog oscillators 1 and 2. Additionally, the FM section can be used to control the amount of frequency modulation over the filter. The three digital oscillators provide the same basic waveforms (saw, square, tri, sine) as their analog counter parts, but the square wave pulse is fixed with no pulse-mod control. Each digital oscillator also offers a wavetable section with up to 20 built-in wavetables, each containing a variety of single-cycle waveforms. A dedicated noise source is also available and provides an unusual pallet of noise including brown, grey, and violet. All six oscillators and noise are mixed together and each have their own level control slider.

The multimode filter was inspired by the Dreadbox Erebus and includes a switchable, 3 state filter, offering 2-pole (12dB/oct) low pass (LP), 4-pole (24dB/oct) low pass (LP), and 1-pole (6dB/oct) high pass (HP) settings. Both resonance and tracking settings offer further control of the filter, and the filter can self-oscillate. The filter also provides tracking, where the higher played notes will open up the filter, not unlike an acoustic instrument.

For modulation controls, the Medusa offers 5 loop-able, Delay-A-D-S-R envelopes, with the 4th (FILTER) and 5th (AMP) envelopes being dedicated to the filter and amplifier respectively. All the envelopes can be freely assigned to modulate almost any destination. Additionally, the Medusa has 5 LFOs, with each capable of variably sweeping through sine, pulse/square, saw (ramp up), triangle, and reverse saw (ramp down) waveforms. As you adjust the Wave knob to sweep through the waveforms, the synth OLED will display the shape. LFO rates range from .01 to 30 Hz and can be assigned to a list of parameters selected with the Target knob. A shortcut for linking an LFO or Envelope with a target is to press and hold the desired LFO (Env) button and move the knob or slider associated with the desired target parameter.

Each oscillator has its own dedicated VCA, allowing for some sophisticated play modes including M (Mono), which runs all 6 oscillators (3 analog and 3 digital) through the filter in one thick, mono voice. P1 mode lets you play up to 3 voices, with 2 oscillators per voice (pairing A OSC1 with D OSC1 for voice 1, A OSC2 with D OSC2 for voice 2, etc). P2 mode can play up to 6 voices, using 1 oscillator per voice, assigning oscillators to chordal voices in sequential order (the first 1st note in a chord will start with A OSC1 and continue to the 6th note using D OSC3).

The Dreadbox Polyend Medusa is enclosed in a sturdy, aluminum tabletop chassis and features specially designed silicone pads for matched density and firmness for precise performances. The rear panel includes standard 5-pin DIN MIDI in, out, and thru, USB MIDI, a 1/4" line input, and two separate 1/4" outputs for master and headphones, each with dedicated level controls.
