Featuring a rackmountable construction, Focusrite's second-generation Scarlett 18i20 is an audio interface designed specifically for use in a computer environment. The device sports a total of 18 inputs and 20 outputs and communicates with computers via USB 2.0. It's designed to operate handily at resolutions and sample rates of up to 24-bit/192 kHz, while its multiple high-headroom, minimal-distortion connection points render it suitable for tracking many instruments at once.
In addition to its two rear-panel monitor outputs—replete with anti-thump circuitry—the 18i20 also offers eight line outputs arranged in stereo configurations, as well two volume-controllable headphone outputs on the front. The unit is fully expandable, able to handle eight more inputs and outputs by means of on-board ADAT ports.
The unit also offers a panoply of digital connections, with MIDI I/Os, S/PDF ports, and a Wordclock output for syncing to external devices. The 18i20 provides a round-trip latency as low as 2.74 ms at 96 kHz, allowing you to record and monitor processed sound sources in real-time. - Multiple I/Os, Front and Back
- Eight combination inputs allow you to plug in 1/4" instruments or XLR sound sources. The two combination jacks on the front panel have been redesigned to allow for extended headroom. They also sport mic/instrument switches and pads. On the rear, two monitor outputs provide your main speaker connections, while eight pairs of line outputs give you flexibility and creativity in routing. This device also sports MIDI I/Os, as well as ADAT expansion ports to hook in eight more channels of ins and outs.
- Intuitive Mix Control and Additional Software
- Focusrite Control—an included internal mixer—is designed to facilitate and power an intuitive array of routing setups. It also provides access to internal hardware functions. Furthermore, the 18i20 includes software such as an exclusive Focusrite edition of Pro Tools | First Pack, Ableton Live Lite, the Softube Time and Tone Bundle, Foscusrite's Red Plug-In Suite, and 2GB of Loopmasters samples.
