    About the Author
  • Professional photographer and bestselling author Michael Freeman was born in England in 1945. After earning his Master's degree in Geography from Brasenose College at Oxford University, he spent 6 years working in the advertising industry in London. In 1971, Freeman embarked on an adventure up the Amazon with 2 secondhand cameras. After Time-Life decided to use many of the pictures he captured while on that trip, he changed career paths and started working as a full-time photographer. Since that time, Freeman has completed work for many high-profile clients, including nearly all of the world's major magazines--most notably Smithsonian, for which he has shot more than 40 stories in 30 years. He has made a name for himself as one of the world's leading reportage photographers. His many books, which have sold over 4 million copies worldwide in 27 languages, include 60 volumes on photography. In recognition of this work, Freeman was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture.
