Product description - What's the Difference between a Passive and Active DI Box? | Kopul Cables
Designed to help you integrate media players, iOS devices, and computer soundcards into your next gig, the Kopul SDI-APC3 is a stereo DI box with transformer-isolated inputs and active circuitry. With this device, you can feed the inputs of mixing consoles and recording interfaces with sound from low-level signals and HI-Z instruments alike, all while preserving tonal integrity across long cable runs.On the input side of the SDI-APC3, you’ll find two 1/4" TS jacks. These are suitable for instruments such as electric guitars, basses, and keyboards. You'll also find a single stereo 3.5mm input for smartphones, tablets, and media players. Rounding out the input section are two RCA jacks for turntables, A/V connections, computer soundcards, and more. The output section provides two XLR connectors, as well as two RCA through-outputs for routing sound to additional consumer-level gear.Operating on the 48V phantom power provided by your console or interface, the SDI-APC3 provides active circuitry that converts high-impedance, unbalanced signal into audio compatible with balanced, mic-level inputs. This active circuitry, coupled with isolated 1.1 transformers on each input, serves to mitigate noise issues often associated with long cable runs. It also helps preserve the integrity of low-level signals, all while preventing ground loops. You’ll note the -15 dB pad for lowering particularly hot levels, as well as a ground-lift shift, should you encounter a ground loop. Its sturdy aluminum housing not only provides durability, but electrical isolation. This bolsters signal integrity even further. - Active Circuitry
- The SDI-APC3 utilizes phantom power from a mixing board or recorder. With active circuitry, the SDI-APC3 allows for long cable runs to a sound system via an XLR cable or snake without signal degradation.
- Multiple Connection Options
- The SDI-APC3 will accept input signals from 1/4" TS, RCA, and 3.5mm TRS connectors. This allows you to send a wide variety of sound or prerecorded music to a professional mixing board or PA system.
- 3.5mm Input
- If you're performing to prerecorded tracks, you can connect a smartphone, tablet, or MP3 player to the sound system via the SDI-APC3's stereo 3.5mm input. The DI box will then transform audio from these devices to a balanced signal; this signal will be better suited for pro-audio destinations, as the noise issues so often associated with plugging consumer gear into mixing consoles will be handled by the DI box.
- Stereo RCA Inputs
- Turntables, consumer A/V components, computer soundcards, and DJ mixers can be connected via the RCA inputs; signal routed in this manner will be better suited for pro-audio destinations, with noise issues due to long cable runs and other factors addressed by the DI box.
- RCA-Through Outputs
- The unaltered signal from the RCA connectors can be sent via the RCA through-outputs to another device, such as an A/V amplifier or recorder.
- Dual 1/4" Inputs
- Dual 1/4" connectors allow you to connect a stereo keyboard and maintain stereo effects. You can also connect guitars, basses, or combinations of instruments. Furthermore, if you're using only one of the 1/4" inputs, you can use the other 1/4" jack as a parallel output, sending the signal to a guitar amp; this usage has myriad benefits, such as splitting a guitar signal during recording, so you have the amped track and a clean, DI take to use during the mixing stage.
- Isolated Transformers
- Transformer isolation in the SDI-APC3's design mitigates the possibility of noise and hum ground loops. A ground-lift switch is on hand to eliminate the issue altogether.
- Balanced Outputs
- These balanced, low-impedance XLR outputs won't pick up noise from radio frequency interference (RFI) or electromagnetic interference (EMI), even with long cable runs. The DI box ensures that quiet and noise-free audio reaches the mixing board.
- Attenuation Pad
- The pad switch on the SDI-APC3 attenuates the signal by -15 dB, thereby taming any audio signals that are intrinsically too loud.
