Product description

Designed for telescopes featuring 1.25" diameter eyepieces, this Lunar & Planetary Light Filter Set from Lumicon contains four colored filters designed to enhance viewing capabilities of lunar and planetary detail. Each of the filters are constructed from Schott and Hoya glass and are coated on both sides to reduce surface reflections for greater contrast and clarity.

The #8 light yellow filter helps to increase the contrast of a variety of features of the Moon, the Santa Maria crater of Mars, Jupiter's belts and orange-red zonal regions, and dusk details of Uranus and Neptune. Similarly, the #11 yellow-green filter further helps to increase clarity of Jupiter's clouds and contrast between red and blue zones, as well as the clouds, Cassini Division, and red and blue zones of Saturn. The darkest filter in the set, the #25 red is used to boost observational detail of various features of Mercury, the contrast between the planet and sky of Venus, the Venus terminator, the Santa Maria crater and polar caps of Mars, Jupiter's belts and Galilean moon transits, and Saturn's clouds. Lastly the #82A light blue filter is used to improve detail of low contrast features on the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
  • Light Yellow #8 1.25" Filter This Lumicon Light Yellow 1.2" Filter is commonly used to raise contrast slightly with black and white films. Especially useful for clear contrast between blue sky with clouds and foreground. It is also suitable for portraits, landscapes and nature scenes. For planetary observing, color filters bring out the most detail because planets are naturally colorful. Different colors bring out different details of the planet you are viewing. Always remember that you want to use the darkest filter your telescope will handle. Most small telescopes up to about 5" in aperture use the light colors. The larger the telescope, the darker your filter you can use. Color filters can sometimes be used in conjunction with a Neutral Density or Polarizing filter to aid in glare reduction. The more you use your filters the more you appreciate them and their affect. The 1.25" filters employ industry-standard 1.125" x 42 tpi threads (except for Questar/Brandon, which use a thread pattern unique to Questar). The 48 mm filters employ industry-standard 48 x 0.75 mm threading, which thread into 2" eyepieces. All larger filters use the given size with 0.75 mm pitch (e.g. a 72 mm Minus Violet filter has 72 x 0.75 mm threads).
    • Especially useful for added contrast between blue sky with clouds and foreground
    • Filter factor is 1.5. (+.5 stop)

  • Yellow-Green #11 1.25" Filter This Lumicon 1.25" Yellow-Green Filter is ideal for scenes where it is important to differentiate the green tonal values in both celestial observation and photography. For planetary observing, color filters bring out the most detail because planets are naturally colorful. Different colors bring out different details of the planet you are viewing. Always remember that you want to use the darkest filter your telescope will handle. Most small telescopes up to about 5" in aperture use the light colors. The 48 mm filters employ industry-standard 48 x 0.75 mm threading, which thread into 2" eyepieces. All larger filters use the given size with 0.75 mm pitch (e.g. a 72 mm Minus Violet filter has 72 x 0.75 mm threads).
    • Darkens sky in contrast to clouds
    • Due to its favorable effect on red tones, it is also suitable for portraits against the sky
    • Filter factor = 2 (+1 stop)
    UPC: 791512973912
  • Red #25 1.25" Filter Compared to the Lumicon #23A Light Red filter, this Lumicon #25 Red 1.25" Filter darkens the reds even more near the yellow tones in the spectrum, as its transparency only begins in the orange-red region. It produces dramatic effects and extreme tonal separation for graphic effects. • Stronger than an Light Red (23A)
    • Clouds are dramatically improved almost to the mood of a thunderstorm; Darkens blue sky creating dramatic contrast between sky and clouds
    • Use with Polarizer for dramatic black and white effects
    • It is more effective in cutting through haze, and moonlight effects are easily accomplished
    • Used in scientific photography
    • Excellent copying filter for blueprints
    UPC: 791512973967
  • Light Blue 82A 1.25" Filter This Lumicon 82A Light Blue 1.25" Filter is a light balancing filter used to increase the color temperature slightly for a cooler tone. This blue filter absorbs the excessive yellow-red light from daylight in the morning. In celestial photography, this filter may "cool down" the reddish tones found in certain stars or planets. For planetary observing, color filters bring out the most detail because planets are naturally colorful. Different colors bring out different details of the planet you are viewing. Always remember that you want to use the darkest filter your telescope will handle. Most small telescopes up to about 5" in aperture use the light colors. • Maintains natural flesh tones; Prevents reddish cast
    • Can create a mood of coolness
