Dating back to the early 19th century and named after its inventor John Herschel, the design refracts most of the intense and damaging solar light, heat, and radiation out the back of the wedge through a ceramic heat dispersion plate, allowing just a small and safe amount to pass through a multi-coated ND3 (neutral density) filter to your eye. The wedge is outfitted with a 2" snout to fit larger focuser drawtubes, and a 2" eyepiece holder. Meade includes a 1.25" reducer adapter that allows you to use the smaller and more popular size of eyepieces as well.For safe use, the Herschel Wedge should only be used on refractor-style optical tubes (OTA) with apertures of 150mm (5.9") or smaller; and should never be used on Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT), Maksutov-Cassegrains (MAK), Meade's Advanced Coma Free (ACF) optical tubes, or reflector-style OTAs.
