Modeled after the widely used A Short Course in Photography: Film and Darkroom, this volume presents photography entirely in its current, electronic form. It places greater emphasis on the most up-to-date learning techniques, allowing students to keep up with modern technology. Additionally, the MyArtsLab with an access card and a Pearson eText are included.

The book presents in depth the basic techniques of photography, and also covers the impact of computers on this important art form. MyArtsLab is an integral part of the London / Stone program. Engaging activities and assessment are part of a teaching and learning system that helps students gain a broader understanding of photography. With MyArtsLab, students can explore in-depth analyses of relevant artwork, architecture, artistic techniques, and more.

In this third edition, all chapters now have student learning objectives at the beginning. Photographs and illustrations have been added and updated throughout. Additionally, select sections have been expanded to provide more information.

Additional Features

    Guides Beginners
  • The Getting Started section is ideal for those brand new to photography. This section will walk readers through the first steps of selecting and installing a memory card and setting menu options, as well as focusing sharply, adjusting exposure, and making their first pictures. To further introduce readers to digital photography, every two facing pages complete a single topic, helping readers to stay organized. Detailed step-by-step instructions clarify each stage of extended procedures.
    Explores Digital Techniques
  • The latest in digital camera technology is examined, including the full-featured non-DSLR camera and cell phone cameras. With technical updates and current product information throughout, this section of the book teaches students techniques with the most current technology available. Coverage includes how to look at a scene in terms of the way the camera can 'see' and record it, and information on how to select the shutter speed, point of view, or other elements that can make the difference between an ordinary snapshot and an exciting photograph.
    Encourages Interactive Activity
  • Project boxes listed in the readings provide activities for students to try, reinforcing the skills they have learned. These projects are designed to help develop technical and expressive skills. Project boxes contain "How Did You Do" questions, helping students to think about the techniques used and their end results.
Identifies How to Make Better Prints
  • Includes information about how to adjust photographs with image-editing software, as well as how to select ink and paper and then print and display images in a mat and frame.
    Covers Automatic Focus and Exposure
  • Special attention is devoted to automatic focus and automatic exposure. Readers will learn what automatic focus and automatic exposure do and how to override these features when it is better to adjust the camera manually.
