Product description Designed for bass guitars, the Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor is a stompbox compressor utilizing an analog, optical circuit. The pedal provides Volume and Sustain knobs, the former controls the level coming out of the pedal, and the latter controls the threshold at which the compression begins to kick in. Specifically tuned to the frequencies provided by an electric bass, this pedal is capable of subtle dynamics-taming as well as full-on, impactful character compression, all while maintaining the low-end response you’d want out of your bass.A Blend knob, located between the Volume and Sustain controls, allows you to dial in your uneffected signal with the compressed tone, giving you the ability to utilize the technique of parallel compression. This technique will provide you with the best of both worlds—dry signal for the initial transient of your notes, and compressed signal for the sustain and dynamics control you’re looking for in a compressor. Additionally, a Grit toggle switch allows you to implement subtle harmonic distortion to give you a warm sound reminiscent of the tone legendary player Jack Bruce used to employ. This pedal gives you true bypass switching to preserve your tone when it’s not in use. It can run off 9V power, but it includes an 18V adapter to provide more headroom, clarity, and output. - Key Features at a Glance
-
- Analog optical compressor
- BLEND knob for parallel compression
- GRIT switch for harmonic distortion
- Tuned for bass guitars
- Noiseless clean sustain
- Power supply included
- True bypass circuit for pristine tone in disengaged position
- Knobs at a Glance
-
- VOLUME: This control sets the overall output level.
- SUSTAIN: This knob determines the threshold at which the compressor begins to kick in. Lower SUSTAIN settings give a more transparent, studio type of compression, while higher SUSTAIN settings impart a more noticeably squashed sound.
- BLEND: This dial determines the mix between the compressed signal and the direct signal. With BLEND fully clockwise, you get 100% compression. With BLEND set at 12 o’clock, you get 50% compressed signal and 50% direct signal. By mixing in the direct signal with the compressed signal, you’ll be able to keep a natural attack while also enjoying the compression of the Philosopher.
- GRIT: This toggle switch adds in a layer of warm overdrive, like the kind often implemented by Jack Bruce.
