Product description Primarily for guitars and basses, but useful with any instrument that has a 1/4" output jack, the Pigtronix EP2 Envelope Phaser is a modulation stompbox providing phase-manipulation in a variety of ways. For instance, you can use the device as an envelope phaser, directing the sweep with an expression pedal input, or utilizing the Staccato toggle switch in conjunction with the Sensitivity knob; the latter choice can give your chicken-picking guitar playing a sound commensurate with the soundtrack of ‘70s cop shows, or lend your Flea-like bass lines a little more funk in the execution of tone. Conversely, you can use the rotary LFO modulation to effect more traditional phase-shift timbres, evoking the sounds of classic Mutron and Uni-Vibe units. No less than five knobs and five toggle switches—fully explained in the Features section—are provided for your tweaking pleasure. The pedal offers true bypass circuitry to retain your original signal in bypass mode, as well as a footswitch for cycling between envelope mode (called EF), rotary mode (called LFO), and a blend of the two. Two TRS expression jacks are provided, giving you optional variable controls over the sweep of the envelope or the speed of the LFO. Additionally, an external audio input allows you to plug in any 1/4" compatible audio source to override and the control the envelope follower, so you can let an outside source control the modulation; this is useful for syncing the pedal to operate in accordance with external beat-generating devices. A power supply is included with the EP2. - Key Features at a Glance
-
- LFO modulation with Speed, Depth, and Center
- Blend combines LFO and envelope signals
- Envelope travels up or down
- Side-chain trigger for beat sync
- Intelligent envelope response
- Invert switch for positive or negative phase
- True bypass
- Separate expression pedal inputs for Sweep and Speed
- Pigtronix 18 VDC adapter included
- Knobs Explained
-
- SENSITIVITY: This dial determines the amount of signal it takes to open the envelope. It can be used to determine how much the envelope opens in response to your picking dynamics. This control sports a wide adjustment range to accommodate signal levels ranging from single coil pickups to active basses and line-level recording equipment.
- DEPTH/BLEND: This knob controls the amount of LFO modulation. When the BLEND mode is activated, the DEPTH control acts as a mix knob between the Envelope Follower (EF) and LFO modulation sources. Turning the BLEND control clockwise will enable more LFO modulation, while turning the BLEND control counter clockwise will enable more EF modulation.
- CENTER: This control determines where in the audio spectrum the LFO is sweeping. When the DEPTH control is up all the way, the CENTER control has no effect on the sound, because the LFO is sweeping the entire audio range of the EP2. With the Depth control at noon (as you would look at a clock), the center knob brightens the overall tone when turned clockwise, and darkens the tone when turned counter clockwise.
- SPEED: This dial controls the rate of the LFO.
- RESONANCE: This knock controls the amount of feedback in the circuit, accentuating the harmonics and vocal qualities of the EP2.
- Toggle Switches and Footswitches Explained
-
- STACCATO: This switch turns on the intelligent mode of the envelope follower, allowing a circuit to watch the input signal and quickly close the envelope when there is a pause between notes. Staccato is extremely helpful for making the envelope pop on every note with, say, a slapped bass, or a fast-picked guitar riff. Use this function in conjunction with the SENSITIVITY control to achieve the optimal envelope response for your instrument/situation.
- EF SWEEP: This switch determines the direction of the envelope’s movement.
- BLEND: This switch turns on the BLEND mode, causing the phase shifter to be modulated by a combination of the Envelope Follower (EF) and Rotary (LFO). When the BLEND mode is activated, you can still use the left footswitch to change between pure Envelope mode and BLEND mode.
- LFO SMOOTH: This switch automatically turns down the RESONANCE control in LFO mode only.
- INVERT: This switch determines the polarity of the phase shifting. The + setting has an overall low-pass effect and will enhance bass. The – side has an overall high-pass effect and will cut bass response.
- ENGAGE: This footswitch turns the entire EP2 on and off. When the engage light is turned off, the EP2 is true-bypassed.
- EF/LFO: This footswitch selects between the Envelope (EF) and Rotary (LFO) modulation sections of the phaser. Both lights are activated when you are in BLEND mode, indicating that both modulation sources are active.
- Input Jacks for Multiple Modes of Expression
-
- 3 TRS inputs are provided, two for expression pedals and one for an effect trigger. There are expression inputs for both envelope sweep and LFO speed. The effect trigger connects an external audio source directly to the envelope follower, overriding the input signal as the source of envelope modulation.
