Product description

The Radial Engineering Tossover Variable Frequency Divider is a 500 series module that enables you to frequency-divide the audio signal path into 2 stems and process the high and low frequencies separately. This enables parallel processing whereby one could, for instance, process a vocal track by adding distortion and presence to the high end, while leaving the low frequencies unaffected. The design begins with separate low-pass and high-pass filters with variable frequency and amplitude controls for each range. These are connected in series and can be used separately to split off either the bass or treble regions or used together to create a band-pass filter to enhance the mid range. This is augmented with a choice of 12, 18, or 24 dB per octave slopes that let you apply subtle filtering on instruments to gently smooth things out or apply a more radical filter at the cut-off frequency for more intense effects.Either filter can be accessed via the 500 series power rack's XLR output by assigning a rear-mounted slider switch. Using the Omniport on a Radial Workhorse (sold separately) lets you take things a step further by allowing each frequency range to be processed separately and auditioned simultaneously. This, for instance enables you to split a bass track and process the low frequency stem using a compressor while processing the high frequencies with an effect like a tube distortion pedal. You can then mix the 2 stems together to create new and exciting effects.

High-Pass Filter Section

  • The high-pass filter section is used to adjust the high-frequency output frequency, slope, and amplitude. This section is wired in series after the low-pass filter.
  • The frequency knob is used to adjust the high frequency cut-off point above which the signal will be allowed to pass.
  • A three-position slope switch sets the crossover slope for 12, 18, or 24 dB/octave for soft, medium, and increased filter effect.
  • Amplitude knob is used to adjust the output level of the signal after it passes through the high-pass filter. It controls the output level for both filters when used in series mode.
  • On/off switch turns on the high-pass filter section and an LED will illuminate when the filter is active.

Low-Pass Filter Section

  • The low-pass filter section is used to control the low-frequency output frequency, slope, and amplitude. It is wired in series before the high-pass filter.
  • The frequency knob is used to adjust the low frequency cut-off point below which the signal will be allowed to pass.
  • A three-position slope switch sets the crossover slope for 12, 18, or 24 dB/octave for soft, medium, and increased filter effect.
  • Amplitude knob is used to adjust the output level of the signal after it passes through the low-pass filter. It is disabled when used in series mode.
  • On/off switch turns on the low-pass filter section and an LED will illuminate when the filter is active.

Miscellaneous

  • Band-Pass switch combines the two filters in series to create a band-pass filter. 1
    Please Note:
You must set the output select switch to high-pass as the two filters are wired in series. close
  • The Output-select mini-toggle switch near the 15-pin card edge selects which of the two filters will be routed to the XLR or the Omniport when using the Tossover with a Radial 500 series Workhorse power rack (sold separately).
  • The XLR input located on your Radial 500 series Workhorse power rack (sold separately) is used to feed a balanced line level signal into the Tossover module.
  • The 1/4" TRS connector found on Workhorse power racks (sold separately) is the alternate output for 2-way mode. When the low-pass filter is assigned to the XLR, the high-pass filter output automatically gets assigned to the Omniport.
  • Double Layer Front Panel: Steel construction adds rigidity to reduce stress on the PC board.
  • Double sided and gold plated 15-pin card edge connector ensures optimal conductivity and signal transfer.

Applications

  • Adding effects to low and high frequencies
  • Band-pass filter to accentuate mids
  • Parallel processing different frequencies
