Product description The Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5043 Compressor Limiter Duo (Horizontal Mount) is an analog signal processing device designed for both recording and mixing applications. It can be rackmounted horizontally in an optional Rupert Neve Designs 5221-RM rack-mounting frame. For processing, the device consists of two independent compressor-limiters designated "A" and "B". Each can be used on its own, connected together for stereo operation, or connected sequentially to enable composite compression. The compressor is used to control the dynamics of an incoming signal. When the amplitude of the incoming signal exceeds the compressor's user-specified threshold, the compressor will reduce the incoming signal according to a user-specified ratio. You can set the threshold between -36 dB to +22 dB and the ratio between 1.1:1 and 40:1. For finer-tuned controls, you can set the compressor to engage the incoming signal at a speed of 20 to 75 mS with the attack knob. You can also set the compressor to disengage a signal between a speed of 100 to 2,500 mS via the release knob. By adjusting the threshold, ratio, attack time, and release time you can compress and enhance the dynamic range of the signal so that the quiet sounds and loud sounds are closer to one another in volume. After compressing a signal, you can also use the Portico's gain knob to attenuate or make the signal louder and punchier overall between a range of -6 dB to 20 dB. As an added feature, the compressor can also function as a limiter when set to a very high ratio, such as 40:1. If the incoming signal exceeded the threshold by 40 dBU, the outgoing signal would exceed the threshold by only 1 dBU. Using the compressor as a limiter prevents the signal from clipping and protects the rest of the equipment in your signal chain. - Buss or Line Input
- The "INPUT" buttons on the front of the device switches the incoming signal between the Buss input and line-level input. The Buss input is useful when routing other Portico modules into the unit for mixing. The line-level input features a transformer-balanced 10K impedance bridging input so that the device may be inserted into any part of your signal chain at line level
- Feed-Forward and Feed-Back Compression
- On the front of the device is a push button that switches between feed-forward compression and feed-back compression. Feed-forward compression utilizes the input of the device to control compression. Feed-back compression utilizes the output of the device to control compression. Both forms of compression are useful depending upon the material being compressed
- Link Multiple Units Together via TRS
- You can daisy chain multiple compressor-limiter units together via the rear-panel link jack. When linked, the control voltage of any engaged compressor-limiter will be present in the back-panel link jack. When both channels of a unit are linked and engaged, their internal control voltage is internally linked and is present on the back-panel link jack
- Stereo Operation
- When the LINK push buttons on both channels are selected, both A and B sides of the device will be linked together, share the same settings, and function as a stereo compressor
- Composite Operation
- By connecting the output of one side of the compressor to the input of the other side, you can build complex composite compressors. For example, side A could be used as a low-ratio compressor to give the signal more presence, and side B could be used as a high-ratio limiter to prevent the signal from clipping
- Side-Chaining and Ducking
- By engaging the LINK push button, the signal from channel A can be used to control the amplitude of channel B, or vice versa. This is useful when you want to use one channel to side-chain compress or duck the other channel, such as when you want to reduce the music playback level on one channel when making a speech announcement on the other channel
- Meters
- The device features two peak LED meters in green, yellow, and red to indicate output level and gain reduction. A central "METER SELECT" button switches the meters between channel A and channel B. The output level meter ranges from -10 to 10 dBU for the green LEDS, 10 to 20 dBU for the yellow LEDS, and 20 dBU and above for the red clipping LEDS. The gain reduction meter ranges from 1 to 22 dBu
