Product description Available for download, the Softube American Class A is a console emulation designed to sit on your channel strips and stereo mixes. You can use this plug-in to filter out extraneous low or high frequencies, add gating or transient shaping, implement EQ, apply compression, and finally, to control desirable harmonic distortion. This software is based on a console famous for its warmth, character, clarity, and punch. You've heard the sound of American Class A consoles on records from Radiohead, Soundgarden, the Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters, and many, many others.
A high-resolution GUI provides both the classic look of the console, as well as visuals that aid your mixing choices. Within the GUI, you'll find an input section with high-pass and low-pass filtering and gain knob, as well as a transient shaping module, a four-band equalizer, a powerful compressor, and an output section with drive controls for harmonic distortion.
This plug-in is especially suited to users of the Softube Console, as its parameters will automatically map to the interface for a more analog-style work flow. However, it also works as a native plug-in for Mac and Windows operating systems. - Input Section
- In addition to high-pass and low-pass filters, the input section provides an Input Gain knob, a Phase-Inversion switch, and a Filter-to-Compression switch. The latter feeds filtered signal to the detector circuit of the plug-in's compressor, allowing you to keep the low end from triggering gain reduction for more transparent usage.
- Shape Module
- The shape module provides a gating section with threshold and release controls and a Hard Gate selector for more aggressive gating. You'll also note the Punch and Sustain knobs, which might be new to users familiar with conventional American Class-A emulations. With these knobs, you can emphasize or de-emphasize the initial attack of each transient, prolong the sustain, or curtail sustain for a sharper, more sudden sound.
- Equalizer Section
- This four-band equalizer offers proportional-Q, meaning the width of a boost will get narrower around the center frequency as you increase the amount of boost. The same is true for attenuation. Individual gain and range controls are provided for low, low-mid, high-mid, and treble registers. The lows and highs are switchable between shelving, roll-off, or parametric, while the middle two are strictly parametric. A handy Gain-multiplication switch makes the EQ more suitable for mastering, as it cuts the boost/attention range of each band. This means you can manipulate a smaller gain range on a large, high-resolution scale, which results in in the kind of subtler boosts/cuts mastering demands. The Order switch lets you position the equalizer immediately after the input section, after the shape section, or after the compressor section.
- Compressor Module
- Based on a American compressor used by professionals on numerous recordings, this module emulates a VCA classic that can be switched from feedback to feed-forward modes for a wide array of uses, as feed-forward is more aggressive than feedback. These modes can be toggled with the New Type switch. The Hard Knee button changes the knee of the compressor, while controls are also provided for Ratio, Attack, Release, and Threshold. A Parallel knob lets you blend the compression with dry signal, which is useful for drums, vocals, and the stereo buss.
- Output Section
- In addition to the Volume knob, this module sports a Drive knob and a Drive Character control, both of which let you tailor the harmonic distortion of an American Class-A console to your specific needs and desires.
