Product description The Hot Hand 3 is a complete system for controlling parameters of Source Audio stompboxes, as well as third-party pedals. It consists of a base station receiver, a power supply, an SA160 3.5mm sensor cable for use with Source Audio devices, and a ring-worn accelerometer. Using minute pieces of silicon to keep track of your hand as it traverses a three-dimensional plane, the accelerometer allows you to modulate the effects of your pedal with swoops, waves, and other hand-based gesticulations.A 3.5mm output facilitates communication with Source Audio’s Sensor and Multi-Function inputs, giving you access to Soundblox and One Series pedals. These stompboxes have all been designed, from the ground up, to interface with Hot Hand technology. The expression inputs of third-party pedals have not. Therefore, in addition to the 1/4" output jack (built into the base receiver for interacting with the expression input of third-party pedals), the base station provides Depth and Range parameters, which help you sculpt the third-party’s expression control to your liking. You can use these controls to better foster drama, subtlety, or anything in between. The ring itself sports a lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery, typically lasting six hours. Charging the battery only takes one to 1.5 hours, and can be accomplished with the included adapter. - Connectivity
- The base receiver can connect to the apposite input of any pedal – be it Source Audio or third party. 3.5mm Sensor inputs, 3.5mm Multi-Function inputs, common 1/4" expression jacks, it's all fair game.
- Controls on Base Station
- Most Source Audio Soundblox pedals have built-in controls for adjusting the Hot Hand input, however, some do not. Also, it may be useful to adjust the parameters on the Hot Hand 3 receiver itself. While the 1/4" Expression output is always affected by the knobs, the DEPTH and SMOOTH controls do not have an effect on the sensor output by default, though this can be changed. The two knobs on the interface of the receiver will adjust the response of the Hot Hand signals. The DEPTH knob controls the range of the output Hot Hand control signal. It’s divided into two regions, minus and plus, so the axis control signal can be inverted if desired. Set this knob to its maximum clockwise or counter-clockwise setting for the largest range of movement. The SMOOTH knob controls the sensitivity of the Hot Hand to your hand’s movement. Set this knob to its maximum clockwise setting for the most smoothing and reduced sensitivity.CALIBRATION is used to set the control output level when the ring is in the middle of its range. Depending on your setup, it may be useful to adjust the calibration to get the desired response. Set the angle of the ring to your desired midpoint and press the CALIBRATE button to do this.
- Axis of Control
- The Hot Hand 3 Receiver can output a total of three control signals: Two on the Sensor Output and one on the Expression Output. By default, the X-axis signal of the Hot Hand ring is processed and sent to the Expression Output, while the Sensor Output sends X and Y-axis signals without any processing. There are six different output modes available to select between the three axis outputs as well as a selection to enable or disable processing on the Sensor Output signals.
- Expression Output Modes
- Since expression inputs and outputs are not standardized, the Hot Hand 3 has a set of small switches that can be used to configure the Expression Output to work with a variety of third-party effects unit. Normal mode is the most common setting used by pedal manufacturers, including Source Audio. Reverse mode is commonly used by Korg. Line 6 mode is a special setting for use with Line 6 effects units and stompboxes.
