Product description

The Source Audio Reflex is a highly-configurable expression footpedal with three analog expression outputs, three digital MIDI outputs, and one sensor output. It also boasts 128 MIDI recallable presets, so you can switch between different scenes of expression control. The pedal can connect to any compatible stompbox, synthesizer, or rack system. It can also control your DAW over USB, and send out CV for apposite gear ranging between 0 to 5V.Three analog 1/4” outputs are provided, as are 5-pin DIN connections for MIDI I/O. You’ll also find a 3.5mm Sensor input, specifically intended for use with other Source Audio products. With the control panel built into the pedal, you can select which outputs are active, and change the direction or depth of expression signals, CV signals, or MIDI CC messages. You can even control the curve of your taper. The Reflex can also route five LFO wave shapes to various pedals, and give you expression control over the depth, beat division, or modulation speed of the LFO. The pedal comes with a 9V battery, but it can also be operated with a power supply, or bus-powered over USB.

Connections at a Glance

    Expression Outputs 1 and 2
  • These 1/4" jacks provide passive 10-kOhm expression outputs. On each pedal, by default, the ring contact is power, the sleeve contact is ground, and the tip contact is ground. These outputs can also act as active control voltage (CV) outputs ranging from 0 to 5V. Each plug configuration can be modified using the dip switches on the bottom of the pedal.
    Expression Output 3
  • This 1/4" jack provides a passive 50-kOhm expression output. By default, the ring contact is power, the sleeve contact is ground, and the tip contact is ground. This output can also act as an active control voltage (CV) output ranging from 0 to 5V. The plug configuration can be modified using the dip switches on the bottom of the pedal.
    MIDI Out
  • This standard 5-pin DIN connector sends expression signals as standard MIDI messages. The Reflex has three independently configurable digital outputs, each of which is mapped to a MIDI message (typically a continuous controller).
    MIDI In
  • This standard 5-pin DIN connection point can receive MIDI messages from external devices. The most common usage for this is utilizing a MIDI controller to send program change messages to the Reflex, allowing for instant recall of any of its 128 user presets.
    Sensor Out
  • This 3.5mm TRRS connection interfaces with Source Audio products such as the One Series family of effects, or the Soundblox 2 effects pedal line, allowing for direct control of effect parameters.
    USB Out
  • The Reflex will appear as a MIDI device in your computer's operating system. As a result, the Reflex can communicate with audio production software that utilizes MIDI, such as Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and more. MIDI messages can be sent directly to the Reflex using the USB connection, which allows for automation of the Reflex within host software such as a DAW. For example, presets can be recalled by outputting MIDI program change messages from the host software to the Reflex via the USB connection. No special drivers are needed.
    Multi-Function In
  • This connector is reserved for use with the Neuro Hub.

Features in Depth

    Control Panel
  • The Reflex's bright LED display and clearly labeled control panel make it extremely easy and intuitive to program anything from very basic to highly complex expression configurations, with up to 128 user presets, and the ability to assign a different expression function to every expression output and MIDI port on the pedal. Use the control panel to select which outputs are active, the depth and direction of each expression signal, and the curve of the tapers. It is also possible to send an automated modulation signal to each expression output with LFO wave shapes. Set the expression pedal to control the LFO's depth, modulation speed, or the beat divisions over a fixed BPM. LFO wave shapes include sine, square, saw tooth, triangle, random sample and hold, as well as a "User" position, reserved for future features. Sending LFO signals is a nice way to achieve (for example) a vibrato effect from an external pitch shifting pedal or a tremolo from the level control of an external unit.
    Interface Overview
  • Parameter Button: Selects one of five parameters (min, max, depth, channel, or type) to edit for the currently selected expression output.
LED Display: Shows the value of the parameter currently being edited.
Output Select Button: Selects one of the seven expression outputs to configure.
Shape Button: Sets the shape (linear, exponential, sine LFO, saw LFO, square LFO, triangle LFO, or random) for the currently selected expression output.
Save Button: Saves the current configuration into one of 128 preset locations.
Load Button: Recalls a saved configuration from preset memory.
Control Knob: Modifies the currently active parameter.
Footswitch: Mutes or un-mutes the expression outputs.
    Switchable Tapers
  • Two basic tapers are available by default: Linear and logarithmic/audio. The linear taper has a linear relationship between the position of the treadle and the expression output. The audio taper has a logarithmic relationship between the position of the treadle and the expression output, resulting in an accelerated value the more you tip the treadle.
    Expression Output Functionality
  • There are a total of seven expression outputs on the Reflex. Four of these have physical connections: the three analog expression outputs and the sensor output. The remaining three expression outputs are digital outputs, which are available on the hardware MIDI connector as well as the USB port. The three analog expression outputs can be configured to match four common plug configurations. The sensor output, designed to work with Source Audio products, uses a fixed plug configuration.

All seven expression outputs have independently configurable shapes (selected from an assortment of tapers or LFOs), as well as configurable minimum value, maximum value, and depth (in the case of use with LFO). The digital outputs have two additional parameters: Type, which defines the MIDI continuous controller to be used, and Channel, which defines the MIDI channel. All expression outputs can be thought of as having a range between 0 and 127. For the digital expression outputs, this concept is convenient, because it maps directly to the MIDI continuous controller values 0 to 127. The analog expression outputs, on the other hand, map this value to a resistance or a voltage.
    Adjustable Treadle Resistance
  • The treadle's friction, or resistance to motion, can be adjusted. There is a small screw under the heel of the treadle that accepts a hex wrench. Insert the hex wrench and tighten clockwise to increase the resistance, or loosen counterclockwise to reduce the resistance.
