Product description From Tech 21, the company that brought you SansAmp, comes this signature bass amp from Queensrÿche’s dUg Pinnick—the dUg Ultra Bass 1000. This is a two-channel amplifier head designed in collaboration with the aforementioned bass player and designed to capture a rather particular sound: the timbre of running a bass into a bass amp and a distorted guitar amp at the same time, to give you aggressive, distorted high-mids and a compressed, fat low end at the same time. It’s capable of driving 1000W into 4-Ohm cabinets, 600W into 8-Ohm cabinets, or 300W into 16-Ohm loads. The amplifier features an unusual architecture in its dual-channel approach, one that encourages you to use both channels at the same time, or to use the bottom, bass-centric channel by itself. The top channel provides parameters that help you achieve the distorted-guitar sound, such as drive and tone controls, as well as a high-pass filter for rolling off low end. The bottom channel gives you the clean tone, offering, in addition to its tone controls and level knob, a compressor that can achieve a whopping 60 dB of gain reduction for a smooth response. Here a low-pass filter allows you to roll off high end, while a mid-boost control manipulates critical attack frequencies. Both channels have their own level controls feeding the master volume knob.On the rear, you’ll note two speakON outputs for connecting to cabinets, as well as a footswitch input, a preamp-in/power amp-out section, and a tuner output. Three XLR outputs are provided—one for each channel, and one for the mix. These XLR channels sport ground lift switches, and are useful in routing sound directly to the house, to mixers, or to recording devices. A three-button footswitch is provided, as is a rackmount kit, should you want to rack this amplifier. - Front Panel Controls
- Mix switch: This switch selects between Mix mode and the Bottom channel when there’s no cable plugged into the rear-panel Footswitch jack. To remotely mix and change to the bottom channel, use the included Footswitch (or any standard latching footswitch), which will override the manual selector switch.Gain: This provides a 10-dB gain boost, increasing the distortion on the Top channel and compression on the Bottom channel. You can also use Gain to set up the pre-amp for different pickups. For example, with lower-output passive pickups, you can have punchier sounds with Gain engaged. Conversely, with higher output active pickups, you can have a cleaner sound with Gain disengaged. Of course, you can also obtain over-the-top distortion by using high output pickups with Gain engaged.Master: The Master volume knob affects overall level of both channel’s speaker outputs. It does not, however, affect the XLR Outputs.
- Top Channel Controls
- Drive: This adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive, similar to when the output section of a tube amp is being pushed.HPF: This High Pass Filter, calibrated at a standard -3-dB drop, rolls off low end to about 1200 Hz.Level: This controls the level of the Top channel, affecting the XLR, Preamp and Speaker Outputs.
- Bottom Channel Controls
- Comp: This vintage-style, FET-based compressor can achieve over 60 dB of compression evenly, with fast attack and medium release.LPF: To isolate the low-end, this low-pass filter drops to between 200 and 400 Hz at a -3 dB slope. When you’re switched to the Bottom channel alone, the LPF is bypassed.Bass and Mid: These active tone controls cut and boost ±12 dB from unity gain (12 o’clock). Treble is internally set at 12 o’clock when you’re operating in the Bottom channel. In Mix mode, Treble is internally set at minimum.Mid boost: This is an active high-mid content control, cutting/boosting ±12 dB in this critical, biting frequency range. Indicated by the LED, it is engaged when you’re operating in the Bottom channel. It is disabled in Mix mode.Level: This controls the level of the Bottom channel, affecting the XLR, Preamp and Speaker Outputs.
- Rear-Panel Controls
- SpeakON: This amplifier gives you two SpeakON speaker outputs wired in parallel. These high-quality locking plugs ensure maximum power transfer and provide secure connections.SansAmp XLR direct outputs (nominal level approximately -10 dB): There are 3 individual XLR direct outputs, one for each channel, and one for Mix mode. This separation gives your front-of-house engineer the ability to tailor your sound for each venue environment right from the mixing board. It also allows you to route the signals to separate power amps and separate speaker cabinets for a bi-amp setup. Do keep in mind that, given the unique feature set and functionality of this amp, it’s probably best just using the Mix XLR if you do not have your own personal FOH engineer. If and when you switch from Mix mode to the Bottom channel, the Mix XLR will still deliver that signal.Ground lifts: This connects or disconnects the ground circuits between the XLR outputs of the amp and the mixer.Preamp output and Power Amp input: In addition to the standard functions of such connections, these 1/4" jacks can also be used as an effects loop.Tuner output: As long as the unit is plugged in, the tuner output provides a constant, unaffected signal at all times, regardless of the position of the Level controls or the status of the Mute button on the Footswitch. This output can also be used as a buffered output to send a transparent signal to other outboard gear.
