Product description Designed for electric guitar players, the Walrus Audio 385 is an overdrive pedal modeled on the amplifier circuit of a 1950’s Bell & Howell 385 film projector, which utilized two 6V6 tubes and only two controls to achieve its unique sound. This amp was prized for its responsive, expressive tone, engendering both round clean tones and searing overdrive. It was also noted for its ability to progressively break up. The harder your play, meaning a softer pick attack, secures a cleaner tone, even at relatively high-gain settings. Tweaking the level of the amp or guitar wasn't always necessary, because the amp was quite responsive to your touch. Walrus has aimed to preserve this facet in its recreation of the classic amp circuit. The tone circuit of the original 385 was deceptively simple: A single knob that controlled two pots internally. If you turned the tone knob up, you were simultaneously boosting the treble knob while attenuating the bass pot. In the recreation of this classic amplifier, the tone control has been separated into discrete bass and treble knobs to give you more control over your tone. You’ll also find a volume control, which dictates the overall output, and a gain knob, which models the preamp gain of the original Bell & Howell unit. At lower values, the gain knob will give you that warm, resonant clean tone. Turn the knob to higher levels, and you’re in screaming overdrive territory. You can use this pedal to get either overdriven or tube-driven clean sounds in conjunction with your amplifier. - Controls at a Glance
- Volume: The Volume knob sets the overall output of the pedal. Since the EQ is capable of large boosts and cuts, you might want to increase this knob if EQ cuts are made, and decrease it for EQ boosts.Bass: This allows you to boost or cut bass frequencies. When the knob is at noon, the response is flat. When you turn the knob down, you are cutting bass. When you turn the knob up, you are boosting bass.Treble: This affords you the ability to boost or cut treble frequencies. When the knob is at noon, the response it flat. When you turn the knob down, you are cutting treble. When you turn the knob up, you are boosting treble.Gain – The Gain knob approximates the volume knob on the original Bell & Howell amp. Run the 385 Gain knob low for warm clean tones, that will still break up when hit hard, mid-way for responsive grit, or high for walls of drive.On/Off True Bypass Switch: Press this switch to turn the pedal on (effect mode) and again to turn it off (bypass mode).
